Opportunity And Recognition Are Offered For Our Region’s Artistry

STORY/PHOTOGRAPHY BY DICK HILDEBRAND
Area artists have been given a chance to display their work thanks to Windsor abstract painter Nancy Johns, who’s been active within the city’s arts scene for 22 years. Born and raised in Windsor, Nancy began her career as a part time picture framer with Poster Optics in Walkerville while studying for her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Windsor. After graduating, she became a full time employee until the business closed in 2006. The following year she opened Nancy Johns Gallery and Framing on Wyandotte St. just east of Pillette Rd., at the same time showing her own paintings at Windsor Arts Council events.
Since April 23rd, the gallery has been a beehive of activity with the unique “3030” show which wraps up on May 7th. All the paintings are for sale and will remain on display until the conclusion of the show.
In fact, four of the paintings sold before the opening reception, after they had been placed on the Gallery’s Web site at www.nancyjohns.com. And depending on the artist’s experience, paintings will sell anywhere from $350 to $3,500.
As Nancy explains it, “Basically the theme is the size. Artists are free to paint what they want, since there is no theme. It’s totally open, so the artists will show me what they love to paint and what they’re

best at. All I give them is a size and a dimension, which this year is 30 inches square and 1½ to 1¾ inches deep. It really brings out the uniqueness in each piece.”
One of the featured artists is William Rapin of Windsor, who was a student in one of the first classes at Toronto’s prestigious Ontario Arts College. Instructors included members of the Group of Seven, known worldwide as some of Canada’s greatest artists. William Rapin also studied art restoration at the College and his expertise is frequently utilized at the Johns Gallery when older works need to be refurbished.
The Gallery represents about 50 local artists and the exhibition has a dual purpose: to showcase new and emerging artists, and for artists to show what they can accomplish and so ensure regular appearances at the Gallery.
The first event was held in April of 2008 and featured 47 pieces done on a 16 by 16 inch canvas.
Last year, the size grew to 24 by 24 and there were 45 pieces. This year, even though 65 artists entered, there’s only been room for 41 pieces.
Each painting is mounted on a gallery profile frame for uniformity and added depth, and the artists use either oils and acrylics. There are no watercolours.
Inside the Gallery, visitors are treated to what Nancy calls “the clean look which provides lots of space: a true gallery setting. People can actually stand back and admire the artwork. I find that less is better.”
The Gallery, which normally displays up to 120 paintings, is open from 10 am to 6pm Tuesday through Friday and from 10 to 4 on Saturday. It’s closed Sunday and Monday.
Anyone wishing extended hours can call 5199452222 for an appointment.
Only local artists, Canadian or American, within a one hour drive of Windsor are featured, and as Nancy explains, “There is such talent here that I don’t even have to go out of my range. We have really good things here. People think they have to go to Toronto or London or New York……but we have it all here!”
Artists can hang their works for free and the Gallery only takes a commission if a piece is sold.
As a painter herself, Nancy always has small pieces ready for charitable donations. “It’s nothing for me to help out a charity and I think every business should give back to the community.”
Her latest donation has been to the WindsorEssex County Humane Society through a kids’ birthday party for Jackson “Pawlick”: her gallery kitty who had just turned two.
The $5 admission gave the kids a truly enjoyable day with all kinds of food, games, and even face painting…all for a worthy cause.
True to her word, Nancy Johns in endeavouring to give back and continue to support the community she loves. She encourages local artists to put forward their best efforts, so their creations can be viewed by an interested public. WL
