Ganatchio Trail Suite Artist Statement
The Ganatchio Trail is a biking/hiking path which runs through a
200-acre naturalized park in Windsor. While walking there I often pass the spot depicted in these four paintings. The title source is Vivaldi’s famous Four Seasons Suite with its descriptive, pastoral character and movements tied together by a cycle of sonnets. In the Ganatchio Trail Suite the common denominator is the varied manifestations of the gnarled willow beside a small branch of the Little River. Over the course of a year I
photographed the location early in each season and then used the photographs as
starting points for the paintings which are intended to convey the rhythmic
change of the seasons.

“Ordinary Objects”
Artist Statement
My work is influenced by the centuries-old traditions in Western still life painting. My subjects include natural objects like birds, flowers, and fruit as well as manufactured ones. Over time household items have become increasingly prevalent. Dishes, bottles, vases, buttons, bowls, fabrics, jugs and baskets often take centre stage. My interest in ordinary objects derives from my ability to utilize light, colour and brushwork to make them interesting, to interpret them in a fanciful manner or to use them as metaphors. Sometimes I create works in a sequence. In 2009 I created a series of paintings which examines the history of the still life in Western art from Roman times to today. By using elements from earlier paintings and translating them into modern works I sought to demonstrate the continuity of interest in depicting ordinary objects. Another progression, nine images of tulips and fruit, was produced over a two month period. In chronicling the evolution from beautiful and robust to fragile and decayed I created a metaphor to show that every stage in life is worthy of notice. Often I depict small objects on a large scale, using image size to enhance prominence and convey importance. My images are meant to reassure with their familiarity and accessibility and to celebrate the day-to-day. They speak to nostalgia for the perceived simplicity of an earlier time.
