DENNIS K. SMITH

About the Artist

Dennis grew up in the small farming community of Harrow. It is those imaginative years and quieter times that form the foundation in all his work. It is the combination of his faith and his simplicity, which causes a certain serenity to flow throughout his works. His love for music combined with his distinctive artistic expression, results in works that come alive with rhythmic passages and bold and vibrant color.

His pursuit of art as a vocation, took him to a number of schools allowing him to study under some of Essex County’s most talented artist; fine artist Sergio De Paoli, Bert Weir and illustrator Bob Monks. Dennis continued his studies at the Ontario College of Arts in Toronto Ontario. Later in his career Dennis was privileged to study under the encouraging hands of internationally renowned portraiture artist and illustrator Carl Owens. He was introduced to the art of relief printing under one of Ontario’s master printmaker Elio Del col.

He has exhibited in juried shows, group and solo exhibitions. His lino prints were exhibited in the Canada – Japan Exchange Print Exhibition held at the Chiba Shimin Gallery Image in Japan.

Artist’s Statement

A successful work of art should visually communicate the heart and soul of the artist. It should stir the imagination of the viewer but above all it should demand a response. That is my goal; to capture the spirit my subject and provoke a response to induce visual excitement and appreciation of the subject. This is done not by rendering an exact likeness, but by artistically reacting to what I see and feel then visually imparting that same response to the viewer. Minor details fade away but heartfelt reactions and response provide lasting memories. I can’t remember the one thousand and fifty third leaf; but I remember the shade of the tree and how it cooled me on a hot summer day.

“Each of us has something to say and each of us may have a different way of saying it, but when we can take the time to stand still, to view the works of God’s hands, we should all, listen dKsmith
