A note from Noah’s Aunt Christine:
5 years ago the Genetic Disorder, Fragile X, was introduced into my life. Not only has this disorder impacted me, but it has changed my nephew’s life. Noah is an amazing 8 year old who enjoys life and has an amazing personality that touches everyone he meets. he is also a child who is severely affected by Fragile X Syndrome. This disorder has caused significant challenges for him and his family, including mental impairment, behavioural issues and motor difficulties. Most recently he has had challenged with school revolving around behaviours caused by Fragile X. Unlike autism, there is very little assistance or positive intervention available within Canada for children like Noah and as such, his family and I are bringing the help he needs to him. Tracy Stackhouse and Sarah Scharfenaker are world renowned specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of Fragile X and its sensory based behavioural issues. These therapists, based out of Denver Colorado, have agreed to come to Calgary Alberta to both assess and create an intervention plan for Noah. As you can imagine, specialized treatment of this type comes at a cost to his family and as such I am reaching out to you for assistance in making sure my amazing nephew gets the treatment he deserves and requires. I want to thank you in advance for making this event a success and for making a difference in Noah’s life.
Fragile X Syndrome is:
the most common cause of inherited mental impairment. This impairment can range from learning disabilities to more severe cognitive or intellectual disabilities. This genetic disorder affects both males and females; 1 in 4,000 boys and 1 in 6,000 girls of all races and ethnic groups. While Fragile X individuals have a normal life expectancy, most will need support and care for their entire lives. It is a spectrum disorder with a characteristic phenotype and learning style. Children and adults with Fragile X often struggle with behavioural problems that arise from difficulties in anxiety and hyperarousal. Learning to cope with stress and anxiety has to be a priority for families affected by Fragile X. Calming and coping skills must be explicitly taught in a developmentally appropriate manner across the lifespan to individuals with Fragile X.
The artists from Nancy Johns Gallery are so excited to help with the silent auction for Noah’s fundraiser. Silent auction items will be posted soon, so get ready to make your bid! 50% off all paintings sold through the silent auction process will be donated to Noah and his treatment in Calgary with the Fragile X specialists.
